Learning success depends on the course set-up

Have all courses you attended introduced you to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria on day one? They should have since this transparency is one of the greatest factors for successful learning and less anxiety from fear of failure.

There are three pillars in learning with success:

constructive alignment, relevant assessment criteria and transparency,

which means that the entire plan and process of learning should reflect the learning outcome goal and always be visible to everyone involved, including the learners.

When it is time for assessment, all learners should be ready to pass it. Therefore you show all learners the assessment criteria on day one – you created the course or CPD activity to make the learners ready for assessment, not to fail it. Answer the learners’ questions about your assessment criteria!

Use DOPS and SOP protocols in assessments. Pick relevant parts from a SOP describing a procedure and use them as formal assessment criteria. Refer to the SOP.

Constructive Alignment

Learning Outcome

“Create an anaesthesia protocol for mice”

Assessment task – Course activities

Plan for and use resources to create the protocol
– Project plan
– Lectures
– Web resources search
– Medical references

Assessment critiera for PASS:

“The protocol is based on reliable and up-to date medical resources for mice. Protocol steps are motivated, and evidence based. The 3Rs is integrated.”

Assessment critiera for IMPROVE:

“The protocol lacks references in large parts, and steps are not motivated or specoes specific. The 3Rs are not considered”
